Commodes

A commode is a type of chair with an integrated toilet. It is designed to aid people with limited mobility or a degree of incontinence.

A commode provides a convenient way to use the toilet without having to go to the bathroom every time – useful for those who have limited mobility or who are at risk of falling, or those who need to go to the toilet very quickly. Often positioned by a bed, a commode reduces the distance the user needs to cover in order to relieve themselves.

Anyone who needs to get to the toilet quickly but finds it challenging to get there may benefit from using a commode or commode chair. They're a highly useful aid for people with reduced mobility or are weak or unsteady. If they are at risk of falling, a commode may be safer than attempting to walk to the bathroom. 

There are a number of different commodes and commode chairs available that have been designed with a specific purpose in mind. For instance, wheeled commodes provide assistance with manoeuvring, whilst shower commode chairs can help with cleaning in the shower. 

Commodes generally resemble a chair with a hole or a removable bucket beneath the seat. They can be used in various settings, such as bedrooms, bathrooms, or over existing toilets, offering a comfortable and safe option for those who find it difficult using or getting to a standard bathroom.

To use a commode, first make sure the wheels are locked to prevent it from moving. Next, ensure the container is placed or attached underneath the chair. You can put a small amount of water in the container to help clean it afterwards. 

There are a few considerations to keep in mind when choosing a commode:

• Does it need to be freestanding? 
• Would you need one that is designed to be used with the help of an attendant? 
• Would you benefit from a tilt-in-space function?
• What environment will it be used in?
• Would you benefit from a combined commode and shower chair to save on space and reduce the number of products needed?
