What is a commode?

A commode—or commode chair and commode toilet—is a movable piece of furniture that acts as a portable toilet. A commode can be placed anywhere in the home so you or your loved one can easily access the toilet.

Folding commodes

How to use a commode

Most commodes consist of a chair and frame, a commode pan, and a seat, with the option to add a commode cushion. Before using a commode, make sure the pan is clean and empty. Some people like to add a couple of inches of water, which may help with cleaning afterwards.

1. Move the commode pan into place, making sure the lid is up, and check that the chair is secure and stable. It may be worth pushing the back of it against a wall for extra stability.
   
2. If your loved one can move independently and without assistance, let them get comfortable. They should use the arms on the commode chair to make the transfer as smooth as possible. If they can’t move freely on their own, you’ll need to help guide them into the chair.
   
3. When finished, the commode pan should be removed so it can be emptied and cleaned, ready for next use.
